We have often heard that we need to take one step at a time, perhaps to help us tear down the initial task into doable parts. In this blog let’s look at the importance of this phrase when starting something new, beginning a new day, acquiring hope, and measuring success.
We have all started either a project or a new job where our minds tell us that we need to be able to do all of what is required of us, like right now. Sad to say that isn’t a very realistic expectation of ourselves. By doing one step at a time you observe your environment, you pick up on skills needed to do the job, and you scrutinize the journey that you need to travel in order to accomplish your dreams, goals, and desires. For example, let’s say you decided to start going to the gym. You can’t expect to do all of your workout in one session. So, it is with any opportunity. You need to add to each day a little more than what you accomplished the day before. You need to push yourself one step further each day, accomplish one more goal per week. Doing one step at a time makes you feel more confident about your task or job, makes you motivated to do more because of your previous success, and seeing the progress encourages you that you are on the right path for success.
How can thinking about your phrase of, “One step at a time” help with you starting a new day? Each morning, take some time out and think, “What do I want to achieve today? What small steps could I make today? How can I make an impact on people’s lives and the world around me?” By taking the job one step at a time you feel less stressed and you gain more confidence to help you on the next step. If you keep pushing yourself to do more little steps you’ll look back in amazement at where you are now compared to the starting point. It definitely gives you such a good feeling.
When I started seeing changes with the use of “One Step at a Time”, it created hope, which is the best catalyst for turning your life round. When you have hope you can see your destination much clearer and with acuity. One step at a time makes the task not too difficult.
Often, we have a tendency to measure success by what we have achieved, for instance, owning a fancy car, a boat or a small airplane, several homes in different locations and a huge bank account. However, perhaps it is better to measure success on what steps you’ve taken toward your goal. If you take several steps in one day you can be proud of yourself because you are several steps closer to your goal. Be proud of those little achievements because those small actions add up into an amazing outcome.
In closing, there are two quotes that summarize quite well what I’ve been trying to say. The first quote is by Will Smith and he said, “The first step is you have to say that you can”. The second quote is a Chinese proverb that says, “To get through the hardest journey we need take only one step at a time, but we must keep on stepping.” So, what little steps are you making towards your goals which in turn helps you manifest your dreams, desires, and purposes?
